Moon Phases and Emotions: You May Be More Cyclical Than You Think

Have you ever had a week where everything feels louder—your emotions, your reactions, your exhaustion—and you can’t explain why?
Then a few days later… clarity returns.
The energy shifts.
You feel more like yourself again.
What if that isn’t random?
What if some of what you call mood swings… are shifts in rhythm?
First, know that you’re not imagining things.

The moon doesn’t just pull the tides. It tugs at our emotional currents, too.
At Wild Moon Healers®, we understand that mental and emotional health is cyclical, not linear.
Just like the moon, we wax and wane, ebb and flow, rise and retreat. When we begin to pay attention to the moon’s phases, we can start to make sense of our internal shifts.
The moon may not be causing your emotions—it may be illuminating what’s already asking to be felt.
Why Many People Feel More Cyclical Than They Realize
If the moon can influence the natural world in visible rhythms, perhaps it can also help us notice subtler rhythms within ourselves.
Whether through symbolism, biology, circadian influence, or simple cyclical awareness, many people notice their inner life has seasons.
The moon can become a mirror for those shifts.
In spiritual and energetic traditions, the moon is linked to:
Emotions
Intuition
Feminine energy
Cycles of growth, death, and rebirth
Each phase of the moon carries its own energetic imprint. And when we live out of sync with the rhythm we’re in, we may feel anxious, restless, ungrounded, or emotionally “off.”
Feeling Out of Rhythm
We all know those moments when something feels off.
You may call it feeling stuck or broken.
I’d say you may be living in a rhythm you haven’t learned to trust yet.
Signs you may be feeling more cyclical than you realize:
You feel productive one week and inward the next—and shame yourself for being inconsistent
Full moons seem to surface old emotions or relationship tension
Dark moon periods leave you tired, tender, or unusually reflective
You mistake natural ebb for failure
You keep trying to maintain the same energy every day… and wonder why it exhausts you
Maybe you’re not inconsistent.
Maybe you’re ignoring rhythm.
A Breakdown of the Moon Phases & Emotional Energy
As you read about the lunar phases below, notice what phase you may be in, regardless of what the moon reveals in the sky. That’s the magic of Wild Moon Healing—using the Moon as a teacher to mirror you back to yourself.

New Moon – The Void & New Beginnings
Emotional Tone: introspective, low energy, inward
feel the need to rest and regain your footing
learn it's okay not to shine all the time
time to begin again...even if you don't know the next step
This lunation represents a sacred pause—a time for rest, reflection, and planting seeds.
Often, it invites you to begin before you feel ready. So do it scared. Be imperfectly amazing in your own life.
✨ Self-care tip: Journal intentions/monthly goals and create a new moon contract (see book Wild Moon Healing, pg. 211).
Waxing Moon Phase – Momentum & Growth
As you leave New Moon energy and the Moon appears to grow bigger in the sky, you are accessing energy that can help you build momentum. One step turns into the next, and so on.
Under the crescent Moon, energy naturally rises. When inspired, clarity and curiosity spark your next steps.
As the Moon grows, resistance may surface. Stay committed to your choices that align with what you are creating. Shift directions when you need to.
As you refine your path and notice pressure to "get it right," you may feel focused, anxious, or perfectionistic.
Waxing Emotional Tone: hopeful, inspired, determined, challenged, fluctuating
Learn through daily actions
Take action toward what calls you
Identify triggers
Refine when necessary
Believe in yourself
✨ Self-care tip: Begin your inspired action list (see book Wild Moon Healing, pg. 213 – Create an Inspired Plan). Ground, move your body, and check your progress (pg. 224). And, for somatic support, breathe deeply.
Progress is always more powerful than perfection.
Full Moon – Illumination & Release
Emotional Tone: emotional, intense, expansive. Everything is heightened.
emotions rise faster
unresolved things surface
what you’ve been avoiding gets harder to ignore
The full moon can metaphorically light up your life, helping you identify what no longer serves.
✨ Self-care tip: Reflect, journal, meditate, or engage in a ritual to release and gain insight.
Waning Moon Phase
As you leave Full Moon Energy and the moon starts to appear to shrink in the sky, you are accessing energy that can help you integrate, release, and restore.
Now that you've identified something ready to be released, you first need time to process and appreciate your growth.
As the Moon continues to go inward, it reminds us to do the same. As we let go with grace and detach from what's misaligned, we need both contemplative thinking and decisive action. This can leave you feeling sensitive and vulnerable.
And at the end of a lunar cycle, as the moon seems to disappear entirely, we learn to honor stillness as we prepare to begin again.
Waning Emotional Tone: reflective, contemplative, tender
Take time to process and appreciate your growth
Forgive yourself and others
Release what no longer serves you
Honor your emotions
Be still
✨ Self-care tip: Rest, reflect, and share your wisdom (pg. 273 – Your Life Box). Cleanse your space, enforce boundaries, and say no as needed.
It is not selfish to retreat into your inner world when you need to.
Are Moon Phases and Emotions Connected?
Yes, there is a connection between Moon phases and your emotions—but not in a dramatic, mystical way that takes away your power.
Maybe your moods are not random.
Maybe your energy has a language.
Maybe what you’ve been calling inconsistency… is actually rhythm trying to be understood.
Healing isn’t becoming the same every day.
It’s learning how to move with your inner tides.
The moon isn’t making you emotional.
It’s amplifying what’s already within you.
When you begin to track your emotional patterns alongside the moon, you start to understand your own rhythms. As you do, something shifts. You stop fighting your “off” days and instead work with them.
How to Track Your Emotions With Moon Phases
Tonight, ask yourself:
What phase am I in emotionally right now?
Do I need action, release, or rest?
What if this feeling is information, not a problem?
You honor your energy—not force it.
You rest when your body asks—not when the world allows.
You release the shame around sensitivity—and see it as a sacred connection to something greater.
You are not broken—you are in a cycle.
And with awareness comes empowerment.
Let the moon be your guide—not your excuse.
Let your emotions be your compass—not your enemy.
