The Illusions We Chase: Why Chasing Happiness Keeps Us Lost

What if the things you've spent your whole life chasing were never meant to last?

We spend our lives chasing happiness...

And wondering why we can never seem to catch it.

We chase confidence.

Balance.

Peace.

Motivation.

Certainty.

Perfection.

Not because wanting those things is wrong.

But because we've quietly convinced ourselves they're places we're supposed to arrive.

"If I can just get there..."

Then I'll finally feel okay.

But what if those places don't exist?

Feelings Were Never Meant to Be Destinations

Chasing Happiness

Imagine opening a map before a long journey.

On that map are places like:

  • Happiness

  • Confidence

  • Peace

  • Motivation

  • Perfection

  • Balance

  • Certainty

We've been taught to believe these are destinations.

They're not.

They're landmarks.

They tell you something about where you are right now—not where you're supposed to stay.

Feelings are temporary experiences.

They rise.

They fall.

They arrive.

They leave.

The suffering doesn't come from feeling them.

It comes from trying to keep them.

The moment we believe we're supposed to stay happy, stay motivated, or stay confident forever, we begin chasing something that was never designed to remain.

The Seven False Destinations We Chase

We chase these illusions because they promise something every nervous system longs for:

Safety.

Every nervous system longs for it.

We believe that if we can become happy enough, balanced enough, certain enough, or perfect enough... We'll finally be safe.

But healing isn't found in arriving. It's found in learning how to return.

Most of our emotional exhaustion comes from trying to live somewhere we were only meant to visit.

Chasing Happiness

1. Arrival - What If I Never Arrive?

"Once I get there, everything will finally be okay."

A better job.

A healthier body.

More money.

A different relationship.

Another accomplishment.

There is no finish line where life suddenly becomes effortless.

Life keeps moving.

So do we.

2. Confidence - Why Don't I Feel Confident Yet?

We think confident people never feel afraid.

The truth?

Confidence isn't the absence of fear.

It's the willingness to keep walking while fear is beside you.

Fear comes.

Confidence comes.

Both eventually leave.

3. Balance - I'll Find Balance Eventually

People say they're trying to "find balance."

But balance isn't something you find.

It's something you do.

Just like walking.

Every step is a tiny adjustment.

Stop adjusting...

and balance disappears.

Life isn't balanced.

It's balancing.

4. Readiness - I'll Start When I'm Ready

This one fooled me for years.

I thought motivation came first.

If I felt motivated...

I'd finally be ready to start.

But motivation rarely leads.

Awareness does.

Action follows.

Motivation catches up.

Waiting until you feel motivated often keeps you standing still.

5. Certainty - I Need to Know First

Our nervous system craves certainty.

Life offers almost none.

Healing isn't learning how to control the future.

It's learning to move forward without needing to know every step.

6. Perfection - If I Can Just Get It Right

Perfection promises safety.

"If I never make mistakes..."

"No one can reject me."

"If I do everything right..."

"I'll finally be enough."

But perfection doesn't create freedom.

It creates hiding.

Healing isn't becoming flawless.

It's becoming fully present.

7. Happiness - Then I'll Finally Be Happy

This may be the biggest illusion of them all.

That one day...

We'll arrive.

Happy.

Forever.

My own healing journey began with one simple internet search:

How do I become happy?

I thought happiness was waiting somewhere ahead of me.

It wasn't.

I was looking for an address that doesn't exist.

Happiness isn't a reward for finishing life well. It's a byproduct of being fully present in the life you're already living.

The more I stopped chasing happiness...

The more often I found it.

How Awareness Stops Chasing Happiness

Chasing Happiness

The opposite of chasing isn't giving up.

It's becoming aware.

Awareness notices when you've wandered away from yourself.

It notices when fear is making decisions.

It notices when you're surviving instead of living.

It notices when your nervous system doesn't feel safe.

Awareness doesn't eliminate difficult emotions.

It helps you understand them.

Every feeling carries information.

Fear asks:

"What needs protection?"

Overwhelm asks:

"What am I carrying?"

Sadness asks:

"What needs to be honored?"

Joy asks:

"What is alive inside me?"

Feelings aren't directions.

They're information.

Your emotions aren't the map.

They're the trail markers.

Awareness is the map.

So, What Are We Actually Building?

If we're not building permanent happiness...

What are we building?

Awareness.

Not because awareness keeps us from getting lost.

Because awareness helps us recognize when we've wandered.

It helps us stop.

Look around.

Reconnect.

Choose another direction.

Again.

And again.

And again.

That isn't failure.

That's healing.

Finding Your Way Back

Healing isn't about staying happy.

Healing isn't about becoming permanently balanced.

Healing isn't about reaching a place where fear, grief, anger, or uncertainty never visit again.

Healing is becoming someone who knows how to come home.

Every feeling you experience is part of being human.

Every season of life will ask something different from you.

Every path will eventually lead through uncertainty.

The goal was never to arrive somewhere and stay.

The goal is to become someone who can always find their way back.

Back to your body.

Back to your truth.

Back to your wisdom.

Back to yourself.

Chasing Happiness

Because healing isn't the pursuit of permanent emotional states.

Feelings aren't the destination.

They're part of the journey.

Feelings are the trail markers.

Awareness is the map.

Healing is learning to navigate.

And no matter how far you wander...

You can always find your way back.

Awareness is the lifelong practice of returning to yourself... one moment of awareness at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do we keep chasing happiness?

Because we're taught that happiness is a destination rather than a temporary emotional experience. When we believe we should always feel happy, we spend our lives chasing a feeling that naturally comes and goes.

Is happiness supposed to last?

No. Happiness, like grief, peace, motivation, and confidence, naturally rises and falls. The goal isn't to hold onto happiness forever—it's to develop the awareness to return to yourself through every emotional season.

What is the biggest illusion in healing?

The belief that healing means never feeling pain again. Healing isn't avoiding difficult emotions. It's learning how to meet them with awareness and find your way back to yourself.
