Breathe Better, Feel Better: Why Your Breath Matters

Updated: Oct 15

We breathe all day, every day—without even thinking about it.

But how you breathe can impact everything from your energy and mood to your sleep, stress levels, and even emotional healing.

It’s one of the most underestimated tools in mental and physical health. You can purposefully breathe to be present in the moment, to calm yourself down, or to uplift yourself.

The Power of Conscious Breathing

Most of us breathe shallowly, only filling the top of our lungs. This keeps our body in a low-level state of stress. When you slow down and take deeper, fuller breaths, you send a signal of safety to your nervous system. Your heart rate steadies, your muscles relax, and your mind becomes clearer.

Living in a State of Stress

Do you have thoughts swirling around in your head? Do you find yourself retelling a story to anyone who will listen or venting about how your life is being ruined? This is what it feels like to live in your head or in a sympathetic state.

This could be the result of living in fear, grief, trauma, or PTSD for months, years, or even decades. Shallow breathing becomes the norm. A majority of your beautifully oxygenated blood goes to your extremities rather than your organs and digestive system because you're living in fight or flight.

Breath as a Bridge

Your breath is more than oxygen—it’s a bridge between body, mind, and soul. Each inhale draws in life, presence, and possibility. When intentional, each exhale helps you release tension, pain, or emotions you no longer want to carry.

Just as the heart chakra is the bridge between your inner and outer self, the breath is a bridge between your head and your body. Breath connects you to yourself in the most direct and intimate way.

Living in a State of Freedom

Do you see the beauty that is all around you? Do you sleep well and love your life? Do you have an uncanny ability to concentrate on what matters and get things done?

You can use your breath to be free from the cage your mind creates. When you drop into your body and access all the other wisdom available to you, life gets better.

Your Breath Matters

Everyday Ways to Use Your Breath

Your breath matters because it heals, calms, and soothes. When you try the following practices, breathe deeply, feel your belly rise and expand:

🌙 To Pause: Take three slow breaths before answering an email, text, or tough conversation.

🌙 To Calm Anxiety: Try equal breathing—inhale for four counts, exhale for four counts.

🌙 To Energize: Use quicker, intentional inhales and exhales to wake up your body when you feel sluggish.

🌙 To Heal: Pair your breath with visualization—imagine inhaling light and exhaling heaviness.

Why Your Breath Matters

Breathwork doesn’t require special equipment or hours of practice. It only asks for your awareness. When you reclaim your breath, you reclaim your rhythm—and that creates space for peace, clarity, and emotional freedom.

Your breath is always with you. The more you learn to breathe with intention, the more you’ll discover just how powerful you already are.
