My Body Was Screaming, But No One Listened—So I Did

Advocating for your physical and mental health isn’t just important—it’s essential.
It’s how we reclaim our voice, our truth, and our healing. A previous version of myself lived in a body that hurt every single day. Every joint ached. Some days were manageable, but many were not. Pain interrupted my sleep, limited my energy, and kept me from doing the things I love.
I’ve tried to push through. I’ve gone to doctors. I’ve gotten the bloodwork. And still, for years, I’ve had no answers. My body was screaming, but no one listened—so I had to.
The Search for Answers
A few years ago, I went in for my annual physical. Like always, I explained my symptoms. And like always, the results came back with a familiar phrase:
“Everything looks great!”
But if everything’s fine, why does my body still feel like it’s falling apart?
A Diagnosis, at Last
This time, I didn’t stop there. I sought out a naturopathic doctor who took the time to run more in-depth tests—some I’d never even heard of before.
And finally, I got an answer: Lyme disease.
That diagnosis was both a relief and a gut punch. On one hand, I finally had proof that what I’ve been feeling is real. On the other hand, I felt anger rising like a tidal wave.
When Anger Takes Over
It wasn’t just about the pain. It was about the years I spent being dismissed—by providers who looked at my lab results and told me I was perfectly healthy.
“It’s just arthritis. That happens as we age.”
“I don’t know what to tell you.”
“Your bloodwork is fine.”
“Maybe it’s just stress.”
Over time, those comments chipped away at my self-trust. I started to doubt myself. I internalized shame and guilt. I blamed myself for the pain, which only deepened my depression and emotional binge eating.
Now that I have answers, I should feel relief. But instead, I’ve been battling another very real and valid emotion: anger—toward the medical system, toward myself, toward the years I spent without help.

Letting the Moon Guide Me
As I write this, the moon is waning—a time for surrender, forgiveness, and release. I know this energy intimately; I wrote about it in Wild Moon Healing. But knowing and doing are two different things.
Releasing anger isn't easy. It can get lodged in the body, causing physical symptoms of its own. In my case, I’ve been dealing with relentless migraines since my diagnosis.
And I know: this is my body speaking again. This time, it’s showing me that holding onto this anger isn’t serving me.
How I Flipped the Script
I decided to meet this moment with intention and care. Here’s how I began shifting the energy:
I received acupuncture to release stuck energy.
I journaled to process the anger and sadness.
I meditated to reconnect with my inner truth.
I practiced breathwork to release emotional tension and ground myself.
These practices helped me shift from resentment to responsibility—not for what happened to me, but for how I move forward.
The Truth Beneath the Pain
Looking back, I can see that my health journey has been a catalyst for transformation—not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually.
Over the past decade:
I got sober and quit smoking.
I grieved my brother, who passed over 35 years ago.
I began healing deep emotional wounds.
I confronted my depression and uncovered the root of my emotional eating.
“My pain was never the punishment. It was the invitation.”
Physically, I’m still healing. I still wake up tired. I still ache from time to time. But now I see that pain not as the enemy—but as the messenger.
It slowed me down.
It led me inward.
It brought me here, to this truth.
Challenge the Story You’ve Been Told
Part of my healing has involved examining my beliefs—beliefs shaped by others, by fear, and by dismissal.
“Maybe I’m exaggerating.”
“I should just tough it out.”
“What if I’m just being dramatic?”
These are not truths. They are false, limiting beliefs. And the more I questioned them, the more space I made for healing.
Be Your Own Advocate
Negativity creates a physiological stress response. My anger became migraines. But the opposite is also true—peace, clarity, and empowerment create space for healing.
“Your body is always speaking. The question is—are you listening?”
Here are five ways to begin advocating for your health:
#1 - Slow Down and Be Present
Healing doesn’t happen in a rush. Stillness reveals what busyness hides.
#2 - Discover Core Beliefs
Explore which thoughts are supporting your healing—and which ones are sabotaging it.
#3 - Face Your Fears with Compassion
Be gentle with yourself. Curiosity leads to growth; judgment leads to shutdown.
#4 - Ask for What You Need
Speak it. Declare it. Trust that your needs are worthy and valid.
#5 - Flip the Script
Rewrite the narrative. Choose empowerment over blame. Choose love over fear.
